Last Saturday, 12/9, students at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School hosted science fair “Science Tornado 2020 - Eureka” with a view to inspiring and generating a passion for science among youngsters.

Having gone through 6 seasons, this year, Science Tornado has returned, marking their 7-year journey of development with a unique and novel theme: “Eureka”.

Legend has it that Eureka was the joyful and satisfied exclaim of scientist Archimedes upon discovering the Archimedes’ principle - one of the most significant physical laws of mankind - when he was in the bathtub.

Nguyen Danh Duc Hai shared: “Through this interesting story, we intend to convey a message about the substantial significance and happiness of immersing oneself in the fascinating world of science. Through science, we can solve every problem and discover numerous colors of life. Science is not merely a subject, but also something tightly woven in everyday life.”

Previously, the club has hosted a pre-event called “Science Tour” in May and June, during which they had the chance to visit several primary and secondary schools all over Hanoi and conduct science experiments. The pre-event drew an enthusiastic response and support from students, and science fair Science Tornado is the biggest event within the chain of activities of the club in the previous year.

In order to organize such a successful Science Tornado, every task ranging from brainstorming ideas, preparing, calling for sponsorship,... is all carried out by students from the Society of Open Science (SOS) club themselves. Preparations last for 3 months, however, due to difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is compulsory for the duration of the event to be as short as possible. The event’s coverage is also limited, affecting the fair to a certain extent.

Children eager to learn about science experiments

The science fair is divided into numerous sections with different subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology. Moreover, there is an area named “Tuong” for participants to get hands-on experience with experiments, the DIY section where students can make their own toys, the Food Science section for experiments with food and items found in our daily life, the Boardgame section with interesting and wholesome teambuilding activities, etc.
