[Celebrating Vietnmese Teachers’ Day] Amsers are known not only for their exuberant extracurricular activities and excellent academic achievements but also their ardent learning spirit. The people who have been lighting up and spreading the spirit are Hanoi-Amsterdam’s teachers and their interesting, different and definitely appealing lessons.

English lessons with Ms. Bui Anh Duong – learning to play, playing to learn

The study of the English language requires great concentration to memorize the language’s regulations. For Vietnamese students who study English by learning its grammar rules for the most part, speaking and listening skills are very difficult to master. However, in Ms Duong’s lessons, English becomes a very interesting subject and they all attract the students’ attention.

1

Ms. Duong – a lighthearted and close/friendly teacher

Thanks to Ms. Duong’s language activities such as presentations, debates, role-plays, her students not only improve their listening skill and feel more confident when communicating with foreigners but also feel free to show off their creativity and personalities.

Ms. Phuong Lan’s Biology lessons – Biology mind maps

Many students consider Biology a very difficult subject as it has many abstract concepts. Besides, before every test, learning by heart several pages in the textbook is quite uneasy for them.

Students always love Ms. Phuong Lan

All the students’ questions are answered easily and thoroughly. In her lessons, Ms. Phuong Lan usually connects Biology concepts with images and phenomena of daily life to make them more vivid and easy to understand. Notes are taken down in the form of mind maps so as long as you pay attention in class and take in the mind maps, you can surely grasp the lesson!

If you still find this subject difficult, try these methods right away!

Ms. Tran Thu Huong’s Civic Education lessons

If you think that Civic Education is a boring subject, think again, because Ms. Huong’s lessons are usually the ones students look forward to most during the week!

Ms. Huong always summarises abstract concepts that are explained lengthily in textbooks, and illustrates them with daily examples including domestic and foreign affairs. The matters are discussed freely and a lot of students enthusiastically get involved in her activities. Ms. Huong believes that studying Civic Education is not about listening and taking notes passively but it is about the students speaking up and demonstrating their ideas and points of views: “Don’t turn me into Chi Pheo, he who abuses the whole village but no one replies a thing, ok? I hope you will all participate zealously in the lesson and defend your argument.”

Ms. Le Thanh Huyen’s Literature lessons –Literature is not just about the data

Many students assume that studying Literature goes with the memorization of the lessons, and usually it is the teacher who analyses the literary work in advance and reads the review to the students. What all the students have to do is to write down everything in their notebooks. However, if you have a chance to study with Ms. Huyen, you’ll find the subject very interesting!

Ms. Thanh Huyen (to the right)

She uses not only the material in textbooks but also in movies, images and music. She has actually turned the subject into one that requires students to study and do research carefully and seriously.

“The most impressive Literature lesson to me was the one that we learned the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. In that lesson, Ms. Huyen showed us a part of the movie that was made based on the novel. I think this is a really good way of studying as it doesn’t put much pressure on you and it makes the lesson much easier to comprehend.” – said Bao Ngoc (11A1)
