On the morning of October 10th at 700-seat Hall, 10th grade students of Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted had a chance to attend a lesson on sex education and reproductive health for teenagers with the appearance of specialists from Hanoi Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital. Through this meaningful lesson, Amsers were provided with more basic knowledge and essential skills to protect themselves as well as maintain good reproductive health.

At the beginning of the lesson, the doctors showed the students a short video about a persistent problem in our today society: “the issue of abortion”. The abortion rate in Vietnam remains high, understanding of sexuality is limited with about 300.000 abortions, 80% of which occur while the baby is over 20 weeks old, 60 to 70% of which are of undergraduates and schoolgirls aging from 15 to 19 years old and 20 to 30% are of unmarried women. Therefore, we should raise our awareness to gradually diminish the problem.

The students attentively listening to the specialists and actively raising questions

Talking with the Amsers is Master, Doctor Tran Anh Duc from the Department of Anatomy of Hanoi Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital. With lively illustrations and expert knowledge, he introduced male genital system to the students, especially the boys and also the changes at puberty, common STDs and preventions.

Besides, Mr. Tran Anh Duc also introduced common contraception methods nowadays, such as: calculating the menstrual cycle, using condoms, vaginal ring, taking birth control pills, vasectomy or tubal ligation as well as analyzing the methods in order to help them get an insight into the pros and cons of each method.

Accompanying the Amsers in the lesson is the appearance of Doctor Ngoc from Hanoi Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital. As a person who has extensive experience in performing C-sections, gynecological operations, laparoscopy, involuntary abortions and knowledge in family planning issues, in addition to explaining the female genital structure, the doctor also had an intimate talk with the female Amsers on menstrual health issues at puberty: from the slightest changes on their bodies to the proper way to take care of your health and hygiene during menstruation. Thanks to this talk, the female Amsers’ most intimate questions surrounding the topic of reproductive health have been answered.

At the end of the lesson, the doctors mentioned an equally important issue, “sexual abuse’. The students were provided with a broad overview of the manifestations and subjects of sexual abuse, plus given advice on how to prevent and handle sexual abuse.

Closing the program, each Amser was equipped with valuable and practical knowledge and skills to protect the reproductive health of themselves and those around them. Not only did sex-education activities help them expand their knowledge of reproduction but also were an opportunity for them to express their queries; listen to the experienced to ensure their own health and the future for future generations.
