Competing at the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC), the Vietnam team successfully completed the difficult exam on the topic of aviation, surpassing many competitors to win the second prize

The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge 2022 has 58 participating teams from 31 countries and territories that have pre-existing strength in Applied Mathematics in the world, such as the US, the UK, Canada, China, Taiwan, and Thailand. This year, Vietnam has 2 teams from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted (AMS) and High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University (HUS).

This year's exam is about creating a combination of models to calculate the closest possibilities of passengers’ boarding time.

The exam this year focuses on developing a variety of models to determine the most likely scenarios for passenger boarding times based on the total number of passengers and the aircraft's capacity.

Teams focus on doing assignments for 5 days straight, creating a specific computational model.

During the 5 days of serious and focused work under the guidance of teacher Thai Thi Thanh Hoa (head teacher of 11 Maths 1) and teacher Nguyen Trung Hieu (teacher of HUS), the Vietnam team consists of Dang Ngoc Minh, Tran Viet Bach, Pham Minh Triet, Pham Trung Kien from Grade 11 Math 1 Ams completed the 30-page exam, accompanied by a set of specific, scientific calculations that had effectively convinced the members of the Jury.

The Vietnamese team won second prize in the contest

Dang Ngoc Minh (team member) said that the IMMC is a very fascinating contest, and the whole team has to apply mathematics, programming and social knowledge to solve problems.

This year's exam on the topic of aviation is very interesting, helping everyone to understand that Mathematics when applied in reality is not as dry and difficult as imagined.

"However, to be able to come up with the best answers, the whole group had to do a lot of research and discussion. Especially, thanks to the guidance of Ms. Hoa and Mr. Hieu, we solved the problem well and felt very happy with this time’s result,” Minh said.

The 2022 IMMC team comprised of students from class 11 Math 1 (20-23) from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu commented that this year's exam question is interesting because it was thought to be easy, but turned out to be far from that. The students felt a deep familiarity when reading the topic, so there was a feeling of ease within them. It was only when the team started the work — dividing each section and task to do research and applying the theory into a formula that accurately simulates the statements to be presented — would you see the efforts and even intelligence in the handling of information from both textbook knowledge and social factual information of the students.

"The children's creativity and teamwork are really commendable. The results this year are a worthy reward for the great efforts of the four students," said Mr. Hieu.

This is the 4th year that Vietnam has a team participating in this competition and is the year with the highest achievement. The team members participating in the competition were selected by the Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematics and GMaths Education Joint Stock Company.
