Science Fair 2017: Santa Labland – The Christmas Miracle of Science
On 24th December 2017, at the A – B hall of Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the club Society of Open Science organised the science programme 2017 Science Fair: Santa Labland. The programme was extremely successful, with the eager participation of hundreds of guests, and numerous interesting experiments.

Science Fair is a scientific exhibition for kids aged 5 to 17 throughout Hanoi. Continuing the success of previous Science Fair seasons, this year, the exhibition marked its return with the theme of Santa Labland. The organizers named this year’s theme as such, because they wanted the guests’ experience to be akin to a trip to Lapland – the magical land where Santa Claus crafts his gifts.

This year’s exhibition consists of four zones: Training, Apprenticeship, Discovery and Summary. At the Training zone, the kids observed numerous fascinating experiments e.g. the Rain of Gold, the Robot Arm, etc. Continuing on to the Apprenticeship zone, participants had hands-on experience, under the guidance of elder mentors, at experiments such as the Peculiar Non-Newtonian Liquid, the Robot Arm, etc. At the Discovery zone, the kids got to handcraft unique products such as a kaleidoscope, slime, etc. To wrap it all up, at the Summary zone, the children participated in the Golden Bell Tournament with spectacular prizes, in addition to challenging games such as blowing the soda can or drawing the cup.

This year’s exhibition has left guests with wonderful memories. One participant of the 2017 Science Fair shared that his favourite zone is the Summary zone, and that he would definitely return to Science Fair in 2018. Parents also found the fair to be a great opportunity for their children to get closer to scientific subjects – once dry and boring, now interesting and exciting.
Even though the 2017 Science Fair has come to an end, it has left an impact in both the guests and the organizers. See you again at the 2018 Science Fair!
