The 14th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) took place in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Viet Nam’s IJSO team has excellently got 3 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals.

This year IJSO attracted more than 50 nations with 279 students. Viet Nam’s team included 6 students competing in Chemistry, Physics and Biology, led by Mr. Le Ngoc Quang, Deputy Director of Ha Noi’s Department of Education and Training and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, Chemistry teacher at Ha Noi – Amsterdam High School.

This was the first time IJSO had ever been held in Europe. The Netherlands, our host country, had been very considerate and professional during the preparation and conducting of the competition. The questions this year required skills in deduction and analysis, as well as skills in science itself. More specially, the questions in all three tests of Physics, Chemistry and Biology pointed towards the theme “Water and Sustainability”. The missions of the participants in the tests were all real life problems humans have to face in processing water, fighting climate change and protecting the Earth. In 2018, the 15th IJSO will be held in Botswana.

With greatest effort, the Viet Nam’s team has met the expectations: each of the 6 participated students got a prize, including 3 Silver medals by Luong Hien Nga – class 10 Chemistry 1 of Ha Noi – Amsterdam High school, Do Cao Minh Chau – class 10 Biology of Ha Noi – Amsterdam High school and Nguyen Trong Khai – class 10 Chemistry 1 of Nguyen Hue High school, and 3 Bronze medals by Nguyen Duc Hieu, Le Hoang Minh and Tran Khanh Vy of class 10 Chemistry 1 of Ha Noi – Amsterdam High School.

Beside the primary competition, the organization board also granted a sub-prize, sponsored by the multinational organization of Xylem to a team of video makers for a clip maximum of 3 minutes to answer the question: “How do you solve water?”. The winner of this prize was the India’s team. Throughout the competition, the team had the opportunity to exchange valuable experience in education and training, especially in teaching and researching of science. On Friday, December 15th, the team will arrive in Ha Noi.

Ha Noi – Amsterdam website editors would like to congratulate the IJSO team on their success. Congratulate Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong and all other teachers who had tirelessly taught the team for nearly 3 months, and congratulate the students on earning the prizes and bringing glory to our nation.
