A Vietnamese game producer has launched what is believed to be the first 3D educational game in the country with support from the science and education ministries.

Vietnamnet Tuesday quoted a spokesperson for Egame, the producer, as saying that the role-playing game requires players to answer increasingly difficult questions about natural and social sciences besides battling obstacles.

The game, called Chinh phuc Vu Mon (Conquering Vu Mon), is inspired by the myth of the carp which passes the tests set by God to reach Vu Mon Gate and turn into a dragon, it said.

Conquering Vu Mon also offers 3D tutorials on hundreds of secondary and high school lessons, Egame said, adding university lessons would be offered in future.

At a ceremony to launch the game in Hanoi, Luu Vu Hai, chief of the Administration of Radio and Television – E-information, said efforts to develop educational games like Conquering Vu Mon are worth encouraging.

There has been concern about online games and its negative effects in recent times, but, like the Internet, they have two sides – bad and good -- he said.

Instead of banning them, Vietnam should encourage online games with good content that are educational and entertaining, he said.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien said authorities support educational games that offer "healthy entertainment” and provide “knowledge and skill.”

It is a good sign that game producers have started to focus on educational games, he added.
