For the past few days, under the scorching summer heat and the uplifting spirit of back-to-school season, teachers and students of Hanoi Amsterdam High School gathered up in preparation for a very special culture exchange event. This festival consisted of over 300 students from 77 nations all over the globe. These 300 pupils are incredibly gifted students who have been selected to represent their countries, competing in the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad, being held in Vietnam.

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is a chemistry competition for international students under the age of 20. It has been conducted annually since 1968 (except for 1971). According to the Icho code, official registered countries will be taking turns hosting the competition. Having successfully hosted International Maths Olympiad (2007) and International Physics Olympiad (2008), this year Vietnam is proud to be the seventh country in Asia to hold this prestigious event.

In this year ICho, Hanoi Amsterdams High School celebrated our own little joys. Out of four competing candidates from the Vietnam team, two of them are from our school (Phami Mai Phuong and Pham NganGiang, both from 12 Chemistry ).Also, from the 21st to the 28th of July, Hanoi Amsterdam is incredibly proud for hosting special culture exchanges events in hopes of connecting friendship, raising the love for science and tightening the nations’ bond.

During these days, Hanoi Amsterdam is filled with this inspiring and uplifting energy. It’s the atmosphere during the school’s board of director and the organizing committee meetings. It’s the atmosphere set place where the students rehearse days and nights in preparation for the celebration. It’s the happy grins on the journalists’ faces, trying to capture the “hot news” or the sentiments exchanged between students and teachers.

To land a spot as one of this year nation’s representatives, the two students – Phuong and Giang – had to attend two brutal rounds of competition, the first being from the 3rd to the 5th of july, 2014 where they had to compete against 460 other hopefuls to pick out the 32 best candidates for the second round (which took place from 25th to 27th of march 2014). After which, the top 4 highest scorers were chosen for the nation’s team.

In spite of this, their long journey has yet to come to a finish, the final challenges waiting for us amsers to take forth. Victory does not come for the gifted base on intelligence alone for it also awaits the individuals with true love and passion for science.

We’d like to send our greatest blessing and encouragements toward our two Amsers. We believe you’ll earn great achievements in this competition, and we hope our culture exchange event on the following 24th of july will run smoothly and end in great success.
