Vietnamese students won top prizes in Japanese technology contest for the youth

(Dan tri) – Dao Viet Tung, a Vietnamese student studying abroad at Hawaii Preparatory Academy won Special Prize while Pham Quynh Nhi, a student in Hanoi - Amsterdam High School won 3^rd Prize in Tsukuba Science and Technology competition on 27/3.

Tsukuba is an idea contest for annual Science and Technology projects. It is held by the Japanese Science Planning Committee for high school students worldwide.

With the theme “People’s ideas of future science”, Tsukuba 2016 Final Round was held at Tsukuba International Convention Centre with the participation of 48 contestants/ teams from many countries in the world, having surpassed more than 3000 rivals in the Preliminary Round.

Here, with competitors from all around the world such as The US, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, China..., Vietnamese contestants are highly appreciated for clever ideas with practical purposes.

Among all, the project “Waking up sleepiness by brainwaves” by Dao Viet Tung – a Vietnamese student now studying abroad in Japan has been given the highest prize in the competition – the Special Prize (which has never occurred in previous competitions).

Tung’s project is based on numerous road accidents due to sleepy drivers (mainly teenagers and truck drivers with the percentage of 24-33%) in all countries.

“ My application product, EEG Device, is a smart device for drivers. When drivers put the device onto their head, it can transmit their brainwaves into their smartphones. If they’re asleep, their phones will vibrate to alert them.

Moreover, the device on the phone can play music to keep drivers awake. It can also connect with GPRS, as well as give out suggestion for nearby coffee shops and hotels for drivers to have a rest and drink some coffee to be ready for a safe journey ahead.” Viet Tung introduces.

The 3^rd prize belongs to Pham Quynh Nhi (a student in Physics 1 Class, school year 2014 – 2017 of Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for the gifted) with the topic “Using Plasma microwave for sterilization”.

This product has been given 2^nd Prize in the 2014 -2015 National Intel ISEF Science Technique contest and helped Quynh Nhi achieve the Odon Vallet Scholarship in 2015.

The microwave uses pumps to lower pressure and electromagnetic environments in order to create the Plasma state in private rooms for sterilizing items at home, hospitals and laboratories.

The experimental process on E.coli bacterial has demonstrated bactericidal ability of Plasma in all kinds of objects. Especially, metal materials (which cannot be put into microwaves) are also sterilized in a safe way, without flammable and explosive effects; as well as side-effects for users.

Pham Quynh Nhi again proves the feasibility of her project using a Plasma microwave to sterilize.

Quynh Nhi uses available and easy to find devices to create Plasma – a technology which hasn’t been widely known to the people. This product can be applied to everyday life because of its availability and convenience to meet the needs of essential sterilization progress for families, laboratories and hospitals.

“Tsubuka Science and Technology Conference in 2016 is the opportunity for me to confirm the feasibility of my project “Using Plasma microwave for sterilization”. While bringing my science project to Japan in order for other countries to appraise our country’s technological development, I was also able to experience and observe various achievements of Japan’s advanced science. This helped inspire me a lot for future study and research. I have also made friends with amazing and talented students in the competition”, Quynh Nhi happily exclaims.

Hopefully, Vietnamese youth will have more innovative, practical technology inventions and, most importantly, the chance to introduce them to big stages.
