Vietnamese students earned 1 gold medal and 5 silver medals at the 2013 IJSO
On December 14th, Vietnamese team participating in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) returned to Hanoi with an outstanding result: 1 gold medalist and 5 silver ones. On that note, Hanoi Ministry and Department of Education & Training (MOET & DOET) hosted a welcome ceremony for the team at Noi Bai airport.
Le Manh Tuan, from Hanoi – Amsterdam high school, earned the prestigious gold medal.
Others receiving silver medals are: Dao Vu Quan, Tran Nhat Quang, Pham Quang Hieu from Hanoi – Amsterdam high school, Khuat Duy Hong from Son Tay high school and Le Ba Truong Giang from Nguyen Hue high school.
At the ceremony, the team’s leader Mr. Le Ngoc Quang – Vice president of Hanoi DOET - reported the remarkable achievement of our IJSO team this year, which had exceeded far beyond the team’s expectations.
To accomplish this, our students had worked extremely hard in both theoretical and experimental tests. In addition, teachers had been very supportive, from preparing accommodation to translating exam questions and even claiming points for the team when there seems to be miscalculations.
According to Mr. Le Ngoc Quang, the team’s scores for experimental tests had improved exceptionally, only second to Thailand’s. This proved that thanks to adequate facilities for practice, Vietnamese students are no less smarter than others, thus improving the performance of the team.
This also proved PISA’s evaluation on Vietnamese students to be precise, objective, and internationally recognized.
The IJSO is an annual competition for 10th graders, who excel at not only English but also sciences. Over the past 4 years, Hanoi Department of Education has been in charge of selecting the members for the team, all of whom have achieved exceptional prizes.
This year, to pick 6 Vietnamese representatives for this competition, Hanoi held two intense rounds of elimination with over 100 gifted high school students.
On behalf of the DOET, Mr. Mai Van Trinh – Head of the Department of the National Assessment of Educational Progress – highly appreciated the accomplishment the Vietnamese team in the 2013 IJSO and recognized the effort of both teachers and team members.
The DOET will have a clear strategy to continue to invest on this competition to ensure further success in the future.
At the ceremony, all students were awarded honors and gifts by the Head of DOET Pham Vu Luan .
The amazing result of the Vietnamese team in this competition has ended a year of great success for our high school students in international competitions, hence proving the right direction for our education system.
