The bright young faces of 2022

An Olympia champion, a chess grandmaster who beat 7 other grandmasters and a student with a perfect score at the 2022 IMO were only some of the many youngsters with impressive achievements last year.

“The bright young faces of Vietnam” is an annual poll, launched by the Youth Union’s Central Committee and the Fund for Vietnamese Young Talents, aims to honor outstanding youths in the fields ranging from academics, scientific research, labor, business, national defense, security, culture and arts, physical training, sports to social activities.

In 2022, the list of these bright young faces has registered an Olympia champion, a chess grandmaster schoolgirl beating 7 other grandmasters and another student with full marks on the IMO 2022 among many others.

First of all, Dang Le Nguyen Vu (a student at Bac Duyen Ha High School, Thai Binh) won the laurel wreath at the Finals of the 22nd Road to Olympia contest. He is the first champion from the Thai Binh province.

Among the four excellent climbers of O22, Nguyen Vu is the only student to not attend a specialized high school. Whether he studies abroad or not, he said, he would still follow his favorite major of Information Technology.

At the 2022 National Excellent Chess Championship, Nguyen Hong Nhung (a Math student at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School) won the Gold medal in Super Blitz Chess. She got 8,5/9 points, 1,5 points higher than the runner-up.

Hong Nhung defeated 5 FIDE female grandmasters and 2 international ones. Before that, she earned Gold for U16 Women in the 2021 World Youth Chess Cup, Silver at the U16 Women in the World Youth Chess Super Cup and about 10 medals at various national youth tournaments.

In the MOS World Championship of 2022, the Vietnamese team had 2 candidates winning Gold medals. They were Bui Cong Minh (student at Nguyen Tat Thanh Middle & High School, Hanoi) in Microsoft Powerpoint 2016 and Nguyen Duy Phong (student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology) in Microsoft Excel 365 Apps & 2019.

Next, for the highschool entrance exam, Nguyen Thi Thu Minh (a student of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School) became the specialized Math valedictorian of Hanoi’s MOET with a total entrance score of 47.5 points (Specialized Math: 9.75; Math: 9.75; English: 9.75; Literature 8.5 points).

Before that, the student was the specialized Physics valedictorian at the HNUE High School with a score of 37.5/40 (10 points in specialized Physics) and the valedictorian of the HUS High School with a score of 28/30 (9.75 in specialized Physics). In secondary school, Thu Minh has won many prizes in Physics and Mathematics contests as well.

For the second time participating in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), Le Minh Hoang (a former student of the HUS High School) won a gold medal. In 2020, he joined the contest for the first time and brought home a silver medal. Vo Hoang Hai (student at High School of Natural Sciences - Hanoi National University) is the first 10th grader in Vietnam to attend IPhO 2022 and win Gold. When he was in secondary school, he took part in the City-level Olympiad in Physics and won Third prize (8th grade) and First prize (9th grade). He received a direct offer by the High School of Natural Sciences.

Hoang Hai participated in the world’s Olympic for specialized high schools and won Bronze. He also joined the National Olympiad in Physics when he was only in grade 10 and won First prize. Afterwards, he was selected to participate in the APhO and achieved an impressive score, the second highest of the Vietnamese team, winning Bronze.

At the end of the 2022 International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), 100% of the contestants of the Vietnamese team won Gold. Specifically, they are Phan Xuan Hanh (former student of Ha Tinh High School, Ha Tinh), Pham Nguyen Minh Tuan (student of HUS), Nguyen Viet Phong (former student of Le Hong Phong High School, Ho Chi Minh City) and Tran Duc Minh (former student of Bien Hoa High School, Ha Nam). This is the second time all students participating in the team have won Gold medals, with the first time being in 2020.

The youngest member of the Vietnamese team to compete in the 2022 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), Pham Viet Hung, a student at the HUS High School of Hanoi) is one of the two Vietnamese contestants to win Gold. At the time, he was the only 11th grader in the team.

Vietnam's second gold medalist is Ngo Quy Dang, a former student of the HUS High School) with a perfect score of 42/42. After 20 years, Vietnam has had another contestant scoring full marks on the IMO once again. The last time was in 2003 with 2 people achieving 42 points.
