The delegation of Vietnam, consisting of 24 students from Hanoi – Amsterdam High School, has made teachers, school, and the nation proud.

In accordance with MOET’s direction of “Education International Integration”, Hanoi – Amsterdam Board of Administration has supervised the cooperation between the school’s Math – IT Department and parents to form a delegation to the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) for five consecutive years. This is an international-scale competition for secondary- and high-schoolers. Vietnamese students have impressed international friends with both their mathematics skills and their country’s traditional culture.

The past 5 years’ results have been very positive and encouraging, due to the expertise of instructing teachers, the passion of students, and the dedication of parents. The competition has helped students and teachers improve the teaching and learning of mathematics, meanwhile developing higher level thinking. In addition, the IMC also connects countries and regions, enabling students to exchange mathematical and practical knowledge and experience the culture of participant cities and countries. The competition aims to advance mathematics program to international standard.

A generation of talented Amsers – the school’s hope

During teamwork, each competing team had at maximum 6 members: one group leader, one vice-group leader, and four students. The test consisted of two rounds: individual and teamwork. Apart from the competition, participants will join various activities: cultural exchange night, field trip, etc. From 2011, the host countries have been Indonesia, Taiwan, Bulgaria, Korea, and China, in that order.

Since 2013, the Vietnamese delegation has been doing all problems exclusively in English and has garnered great results. This affirms that teaching and learning of mathematics and science in English is a prudent strategy, improving the potential for English education in compliance with the MOET’s proposal.

Choosing suitable students for the competition is a difficult task that also required confidence in student’s ability. That confidence paid off when the Vietnamese delegation brought back 24 individual awards including 3 gold medals, along 5 champion cups and 13 teamwork cups. One student got the highest score for the individual round, while one team achieved the maximum score of 400/400 in the teamwork round. The past 5 years’ results have shown steady rise, and this year’s is an important mark for the school, illustrating increasingly deep international integration.
