STUDENT COUNSELLING SERVICE AT HANOI - AMSTERDAM HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE GIFTED

V. A. Sukhomlynsky, a well-known educator, once said: “To educate a person–one must first know the person’s soul, see and feel their individual world.” This means that to effectively influence students, one must understand the students’ mentality. Thus, the fundamental knowledge of pupils’ mentality growth is extremely essential for every educator, from management boards to event organisers or teachers.

Understanding the importance of mental problems to students in general, and the school’s pupils in particular, Hanoi - Amsterdam High school for the Gifted encouraged counselling at school by establishing Student Counselling Service, and began the service’s operation. The service’s aim is to prevent, detect, support and intervene (if necessary) when students encounter difficulties regarding mental health in studying and in life; support students brush up on life skills; support parents, teachers, and other school members in taking care of students’ mental health; cooperate with related organisations in supporting and intervening when students have problems relating to mental illness.

With the mentioned aims, Student Counselling Service is operated through these means:

- Organise in person counselling.
- Organise training for teachers.
- Organise mentality and life skills-focused activities for students.
- Counsel via email, Confession sites, publishing specialized articles on the website,…

Student Counselling Service concentrates on:

 - Counselling about age groups’ mentality, sex education, marriage, family, adolescent’s reproductive health.

- Counselling, educating skills, ways to behave politely, balance emotions.

- Counselling skills, methods of effective studying and career orientation (depending on school level).

- Counselling parents, teachers and other school members about communicating and approaching students.

- Counselling students with difficulties who need support, intervention, and timely resolution.

- Introducing students to centres, psychiatrists regarding students suffering from psychological disorder beyond the school’s counselling abilities,...

The school’s Student Counselling Service includes passionate, responsible and willing teachers. It is placed on the 3rd floor, H building, Hanoi - Amsterdam High school for the Gifted, and is equipped with basic infrastructures suitable for counselling at school.

Together with the management board’s care, counselling teachers’ passion, and Education Union, Parent-teacher association, Alumni, Psychology Club’s support and solidarity, we hope that counselling activities at Hanoi-Amsterdam High school for the Gifted will develop and operate effectively.
